Why B1 English test is important?
It is essential for public safety that all licensed private hire drivers are able to communicate in English at an appropriate level.
Anyone how applied for a new PHV driver's licence on or after 1 April 2023 is required to take and pass both the English language speaking and listening test and SERU assessment before thy can be licensed.
Drivers must satisfy the ELR by taking and passing a speaking and listening test and the SERU assessment is used to assess their reading and writing skills.
Speaking and listening test
The speaking and listening test consists of a 15 - 20 minute conversation.
How do you pass B1 level?
You need lots of practice to learn a new language , like a Solving exercises, practising reading, writing and listening are the key aspects of passing the B1 level exam.
How do I prepare for a B1 test topic?
When choosing your topic, you should choose a subject that you know a lot about and can talk about with the friends or fellow for up to 5 minutes such as: a hobby, holiday, your family, your job, your home country.
How many types of B1 English test are there?
B1 Preliminary is made up of four papers developed to test students' English skills. You can see exactly what's in each paper below. Is it hard to pass B1?
The B1 level is the most difficult because of the lot of grammar and vocabulary knowledge that you need to grasp. No matter, how difficult or lengthy it looks, learn things slowly and reinforce all you have done as you may go through.
1. What type of B1 exam do you need to take?
There are two types of B1 exams:
a) B1 GESE Grade 5
You must take and pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level B1 in Speaking and Listening if you want to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (to settle) or British Citizenship
This B1 GESE Grade 5 exam takes only 10 minutes during which your speaking and listening will be tested. You will receive provisional results on the same day whereas the certificate will be sent to you usually within 7 days
You might also need to take a ‘Life in the UK’ Test as part of your application. Remember that it’s is not a Trinity test.
b) B1 SELT – ISE I
You must take and pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at least CEFR level B1 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening for a:
Tier 1,2,3 and 4 visas

Indefinite Leave to Remain
British Citizenship ( Naturalisation)
