New Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnel Toll Charges – What You Need to Know
4 April 2025
Starting from 7th April 2025, Transport for London (TfL) will introduce a new toll system for both the Silvertown Tunnel (which opens on the same day) and the existing Blackwall Tunnel. The tolls will be applicable daily from 06:00 to 22:00, with charges varying based on the time of travel. Below is a breakdown of the new pricing structure:
Toll Rates
Peak Rate – £4.00 per trip
Northbound: Monday to Friday, 06:00–10:00
Southbound: Monday to Friday, 16:00–19:00
Off-Peak Rate – £1.50 per trip
Northbound: Monday to Friday, 10:01–22:00; Saturday and Sunday, 06:00–22:00
Southbound: Monday to Friday, 06:00–15:59 and 19:01–22:00; Saturday and Sunday, 06:00–22:00
The toll does not apply between 22:00 and 06:00, meaning overnight journeys remain free of charge.
Important Information for Minicab Drivers
Minicab drivers should be aware that they are not automatically exempt from these tolls. However, if your vehicle is a Zero-Emission Capable (ZEC) vehicle or a wheelchair-accessible private hire vehicle, you may qualify for an exemption when completing a booking. Check your vehicle’s eligibility on the TfL website to avoid unnecessary charges.
Additionally, as a minicab driver, factoring toll charges into your fare pricing and informing passengers of potential extra costs will be crucial for smooth operations.
Exemptions from Toll Charges
Certain vehicles will be exempt from the toll charges when completing a booking:
Wheelchair-accessible vehicles
Zero-emission capable (ZEC) vehicles

How to Pay the Toll Charges
TfL encourages drivers to register for Auto Pay to ensure they are charged the correct rate automatically. The service is free to register and renew, making it a convenient option for regular commuters.
For those who do not use Auto Pay, payments must be made manually through TfL’s website before midnight on the third day after travel to avoid penalty charges.
Why Are These Tolls Being Introduced?
The toll system is designed to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and fund tunnel maintenance. The Silvertown Tunnel aims to ease traffic congestion at the heavily used Blackwall Tunnel, providing a more reliable travel route between East and South London.
Plan Ahead and Avoid Delays
As these charges come into effect, drivers should plan their routes carefully and consider using toll-exempt vehicles where possible. Registering for Auto Pay will also help avoid any unexpected penalties.
